I’m anti-mirror Lorca around here - you probably could guess though. Any positive qualities he exhibits are quite secondary to him being the worst.

Open to being pro-prime Lorca if we get to see him and he’s better than portrayed in Drastic Measures (maybe as portrayed in some of the best prime Lorca fics), but until then…

I’m pretty pro-Lorca (in a “I like the character” way not in a “I’m going to woobify this character and excuse his actions” way) and I’ve followed both of you knowing you’re anti-Lorca without needing anything tagged. I guess I’ve never found anything you’ve wrote inflammatory enough.

the thing that makes Julian Bashir a Truly Great character is the fact that the writers of DS9 fully understood how fucking annoying he is.

i ordinarily hate the trope where someone is a professional ~genius while being a jackass in their personal life, but DS9 found a perfect balance with Bashir because his behavior is the butt of the joke. (also, his day-to-day obnoxiousness is pretty lighthearted, more like an annoying coworker than a genuinely damaging person.) he’s a dweeby LARPer with an overinflated ego, and his ridiculous flirting is intentionally cringeworthy. but at the same time, the show avoids that Sherlock thing where he’s ~forgiven for some social transgression because he Saved The Day. they just make it clear that he’s simultaneously an immature idiot and extremely good at his job.

i just watched the s5 episode “Nor the Battle to the Strong” (EXCELLENT ep, btw), and it has such a great balance between the two sides of his personality. it opens with Bashir bragging about some scientific achievement while teenage Jake Sisko rolls his eyes in the background, but once they end up in serious danger, it’s like a switch flips. he becomes efficient, professional and brave, without any grandstanding. so while most of the time he’s a cheerful disaster zone, he can be a perfect starfleet officer when he needs to be.

one of the things that makes Julian Bashir both a great doctor AND a Human Disaster is that he is incredibly resistant to being disliked

by which I mean: when people find Julian Bashir super annoying he doesn’t factor it into his subsequent behavior

most of us are bothered if we feel that someone dislikes us. we either try to change our behavior to be more likeable or we dislike and/or avoid that person in turn. not Julian Bashir though

when patients are acting out and higher-ups are being d*cks he doesn’t take it personally, he’s just like “k cool, you hate me, that’s your prerogative, you still need to take your medicine” and Gets The Job Done with a minimum of drama and/or House-style assholery. but then in social situations he’s just this obliviously annoying twerp who Can’t Take A Goddamn Hint. hence exchanges like this:

Garak: Doctor, did anyone ever tell you that you are an infuriating pest?

Bashir: Chief O'Brien, all the time, and I don’t pay any attention to him either.

in other words: Excellent Doctor Skills, Terrible People Skills

I also think too that, in the episodes where his genius is useful (like in The Quickening), the focus isn’t so much on him and what an awesome genius he is but on the horrific situation he’s dealing with and the people who are now subject to his terrible people skills because he’s trying to save their lives.

Now that I think about it, Bashir was one of my first dude crushes and I wonder if his immaturity was why 12-year-old me could relate to him so much.

agreed I think that focus on actually saving lives rather than flaunting his genius is what saves Bashir as a character
and for the record I am a nearly twenty eight and I still relate to Bashir 110% but more than that I actually like him. I remember that interview with Andy Robinson where he jokes “Bashir is such a loser!” and I thought, but what I like about him is that he’s a good loser. he’s a good sport. he’s sporting. he’s a dude who read kipling’s “If—” and took it to heart. I think that’s why he ended up winning O’Brien over, especially when they played games together
I mean yeah he can be an immature ass but unlike your average Douchey Supergenius he’s willing to learn and be challenged, he’s arguably the most generous-minded and forgiving character on the show, and he never lets his pride get in the way of his compassion
in summary: Julian Bashir is a Good Dude and Good Friend has lots of admirable qualities apart from being a Dreamy Giraffe Prince and no one can tell me otherwise

I like Bashir also, just for different reasons than I did then.

Like, you could be totally unfamiliar with Trek but watch any show and know exactly when it’s from. There’s no subtlety, and it’s wonderful. (But it’s hard to tell when you’re in that moment; I definitely remember comparing Voyager to TOS and thinking that at least 90s fashions are timeless.)

because i, apparently, do this in my free time now, i took today (june 16, 2018) to go through the discovery ao3 tag and compile some statistics on the distribution of content for different ships.

DISCLAIMER ON HOW I GATHERED MY DATA: i personally went through each tag for the eight most popular romantic ships. i included all fics written in english in which the relationship was the main pair with the addition of ot3 fics, and then added up all the word counts. i did this using a calculator and excel. any calculation mistakes are likely minor.

here is the breakdown of total word counts and their percent of the whole

if you hate tables, below is a pie chart with essentially the same information

this does not include all of the fics in the discovery tag—only the ones i found by clicking on the relationship tag of the top eight most popular ships.

a few comments have mentioned that it’s great that the majority of the ships feature at least one poc (looks like the only exception is lorca/cornwell), and i do agree, but

what would be a much more time-consuming but much more telling project would be to somehow calculate which character these fics concentrate on. although not substantiated with data, i’m willing to bet that most hugh/paul fics focus on paul, most michael/lorca fics focus on lorca, etc. again, this is just a guess made from what i have seen from the fandom here

however, i think it’s really amazing that about 40% of these ships involve michael. good job on that, fandom.

some other comments have mentioned surprise at the predominance of some ships versus others. i was also surprised, even though i’d been slightly familiar with the amount of fics in each tag. something really interesting is that there are more cornwell/lorca fics than michael/philippa, but michael/philippa ultimately has more content.

i would also say that any ships 5% and under can be considered rarepairs.

the only “canon” ships on here are hugh/paul, cornwell/lorca, and ash/michael. it is really quite interesting to contend with the data with this in mind

With OP’s blessing, I am adding my DSC character pie charts–I think these shipping pie charts and my character pie charts complement each other in really interesting ways.

In November, the lack of Michael-centric content on Tumblr and AO3 inspired me to look at the actual AO3 data on how many fics each character was tagged in on each Trek show. The pie charts I made show, out of all the fics in which one of the given show’s ten most popular characters are tagged, what percentage of fics tags each character. (In other words, I was lazier about math and went for ”how many” rather than “how much.”)

@michaelburnhamfanclub inspired me to update the DSC pie charts now that Season 1 is complete:

(For the second chart, I combined prime+mirror versions of each character, which seemed like the clearest way to format this particular graphic. If anyone thinks this makes the statistics look artificially better, or worse, or is just interested in seeing prime and mirror characters counted individually, I’m happy to make that version.)

There’s a lot more to analyze in the full set of pie charts for all the shows wrt to gender and race and ethnicity and sexuality (m/m is popular on AO3, doncha know), and there are a lot of factors impacting how much content is generated about a show’s lead (Michael was the first lead who isn’t the captain, etc).

But the fact that Janeway, the white female Trek lead, is tagged in 29% of her fandom’s fics, while Michael is tagged in just under 17% (and Sisko, the black male Trek lead, is at 7%) puts some really hard data on fandom patterns being influenced by race and racism.

(As I said on that post, I’m not saying that it’s bad on an individual level to like white characters, or that Michael needs to be everyone’s fave. But, as a white Star Trek fan, I think it’s important to have these conversations and look at this kind of data, so that we can be more thoughtful and aware of why we feel the preferences we feel and make the choices we make, and ultimately create a more inclusive fandom.)

Holy cow, that’s a whole lotta Hugh/Paul. I always wondered if there would be more or less fanfic if there was a canonical slash pairing. Some people have argued that fanfic is inherently subversive, and if they actually gave us what we wanted in the canon, fan writers would lose interest. I guess that’s not true of Hugh/Paul. Though they did end that pairing, so there’s that…
I really wonder what Voyager’s pie chart would have looked like a couple of years in. I would guess it would be mostly slash, with a lot less Janeway. I remember there being a ton of m/m in the early days. Now, J/C is far and away the most popular pairing on AO3. No others even come close. Maybe there’s something to the belief that slashers tend to be the first ones into a fandom.
I don’t doubt that race is a huge factor in which characters fans fall in love with. But I wonder how much of that comes from the source - that is, the writers. The Voyager line counts showed that the writers wrote more for the white characters than for the others. Not surprising that there’s not a lot of Tuvok fanfic, when he was barely on screen.
Then there’s DS9. I remember hearing rumors that one reason DS9 was an ensemble show was because they didn’t think Avery Brooks could carry a show the way William Shatner and Patrick Stewart carried theirs. And some fans wondered if that was because of his talent or his race.
Note, I don’t think the writers were actively racist or anything. They’re just mostly white guys, and they’re comfortable writing for characters who are like them. Writing for a TV series is unbelievably crazy and hectic, and in the mad rush, they tend to fall back on what’s easy.

what she means: why is nyota uhuras job being constantly underestimated and made out to be less important/less impressive than it really is. uhura not just a spaceship receptionist. she takes most of the ships main communications with other ships and other planets. she is capable of speaking multiple romulan dialects, klingon, english and swahili, probably among several other languages that she has a working knowledge of. uhura translates codes and identifies sonic anomalies/subspace fuckery. her job is not just answering the fuckin space phone like damn.
